So many Gel Press prints...so many scraps...and what do we do with them?? Create an animal, of course. In this project, I’ve grabbed a handful of scraps from previous Gel Press projects and started gluing.

Gel Press Giraffe

Here’s a step by step.

Supplies

  • 7″ X 14″ Wooden Panel
  • 8″ X 10″ Gel Press Plate
  • Matte Gel Medium
  • White Charcoal Pencil
  • Black Charcoal Pencil
  • Black Archival Pen
  • White Gel Pen
  • White Gesso
  • Gelatos
  • 18K Gold Paint Pen

Adhere Gel Press scraps to your substrate (in this case, a wooden panel) with matte gel medium.

Sketch a giraffe to use as a template.

Trace around the template with a white charcoal pencil. It would also be fine to use a regular graphite pencil. I added a sun and a couple flowers.

Using white gesso, paint all of the negative space. For a more transparent look, add water to the gesso. If you want more coverage, brush on several coats.

With Gelatos, add a touch of green grass and blue sky.

Add shading with a black charcoal pencil and doodling with black and white pens.  I also used an 18K Gold paint pen to add some sparkle. Finish edges with black charcoal pencil, oil pastel, or a little acrylic paint.
