Hi, Kathy Adams here today. When I get around to scrapbooking, instead of spending hours rifling through my stacks to find the exact patterns I need to match my photos, I’d rather create my own. By using the 12″ x 12″ size Gel Press® Plate, I can customize a set of patterned paper to create a truly unique scrapbook layout for that very special photo.
To make the patterned paper I used some obvious mark-making tools, like stencils and stamps, but included denim fabric (my new favorite!) and corrugated cardboard which created unique effects.
Watch the video below to my story about scrapbooking and to see how I created this layout.

Here are more detail shots of the layout.
Things to remember about creating your own patterned paper:
- Vary the size and shape of the patterns. In my layout, I used the overall denim pattern for adding texture then combined the small lines, medium coral , nd large shells.
- Limit the color palette to three or less. Use different shades of each color to add depth and interest. I used tone-on-tone colors when creating my paper to “quiet the chaos”.
- Add texture with distressed or inked edges, book pages, fabric or ribbon.
- Add contrast to make the photo pop. Mat lighter photos on darker paper, etc.
I have an idea for all of that scrapbook paper you’re hoarding. How about printing on them with the 12″ x 12″ Gel Press® Plate? We’d love to see your creations on our Facebook group, Gel Press Junkies.
