Marlene was born in sunny South Africa. She counts herself very lucky to have been brought up in a warm, loving and creative environment. Her parents owned a pottery factory, where hand-painted items were produced. This gave her the opportunity to watch over their shoulders and learn more about the creative industry as she grew up. She was always stimulated to make art and won her first art prices at a very young age. She had painting and graphic art as subjects untill she was 18 and went on to study Theater Technology (props/decor/costume design/make-up art). This industry failed to capture her heart and she decided to further her studies in the beauty branche.
This led her to stop creating and move to Dubai, where she furthered her career in the beauty industry, as a beauty trainer. In the Middle East she met her Dutch husband and together they settled in a small coastal town in The Netherlands in 2002. She still lives there with her husband and two lovely children.
Her actual art journey started 2008, when circumstances forced Marlene to stop working and become a stay at home mom(a gift from above). For the first time in 10 years she picked up her pencils, brushes, paints and inks.
MY SEARCH IS ONGOING FOR THE ULTIMATE ART ADVENTURE
For several years she worked as an acrylic artist, did several exhibitions and worked on commission. Until she discovered the joy that mixed media and art journaling brought to her life. She now designs for the Craft industry, tutors and creates to her hearts desire. Marlene’s work can best be describes as vibrant, colourful, positive and innocent.
I try to work in several art styles, not limiting myself to man set borders. I believe that it is part of my creative freedom to explore all styles that I like and broadens not only my view of art, but the all over experience too.
Her art can be found in private collections in England, South Africa, Australia, Argentina, U.S.A, Canada, Germany, Namibie, Kuwait, U.A.E. and Holland.
Marlene tries to portray a childlike view and innocence.
There is enough sadness in the world, I have no intention to trigger any negative emotion with what I create….I want to let people enjoy viewing my art, without overthinking it. I want to use it, to uplift someones mood, comfort them when they are sad and bring a smile to their face.
Marlene tutors weekly art journaling and playful painting classes, as well as workshops.
